Uploading a video file to Archive.org

Inputting information about the Video file on Archive.org Information about your video file, eg Title, Subject, Author etc is called metadata. It is normal to input/ publish this information via a web form. This is also true with archive.org . There are a few ways of uploading the video content to go with it. We'll look at them all on this page. Hopefully the first will work for you. All proceedures require you to register with archive.org
Registering with Archive.org On the front page click on join us.

You then get a form to fill out with your details. And some terms of use. When you are happy with the terms enter your email, password, and name that you want to be displayed with your entries. and click Get Library Card.

You should then be logged in.
You should then click on the Upload button on the top right of the screen. You should see the following screen.

There are a few options availble to you now. If you don't have a particularly large file say under 20Mb and your connection is quite stable you should try to follow the suggested option and Enter a title for your work and click the Next button.
However with larger files this option, which uses a web form to upload your video, doesn't work and you will have to try the other option for 'files over 100mb'. We'll come back to that in a later section.
Enter into the Description box as much information as you think will be relevant to people wanting to find your video.
Add as many keywords as you think is relevant. This also helps people find your video.

Under the section File to upload. Click on the Browse button and locate the file you want to upload on your hard drive, then click OK.
Under Type of item choose (movies).
Then Click on Choose Licence. A pop up window will appear.

I choose the above options for a licence so that commercial use of the file can't be had without permission but others can use parts of it if they also release their work under a Creative Commons licence. There is excellent information about how and why to use licences on the Creative Commons site
When you are happy Click Select a Licence button and click Proceed on the next page.
The pop up window should then dissappear leaving the licence information in the form of the original web page.

If you are just testing this process out (like I am right now to create a tutorial) then click on this is a test item.
Then click Upload files.
The whole screen goes dark to let you know that you need to wait while the file uploads.

If this process fails we need to go back to Step 1 and upload the file in a different way. We will upload your file and information in another way.
Uploading your file using the CC publisher tool After you log in and click on Upload as shown previously you will see this screen

There is a link on this page to the Creative Commons Publsher Tool - this is a application which has a built in ftp programme. It allows you to do all the stages of uploading and adding information about the file. It's the next easiest step and it's available for Mac. Linux and Windows.

Uploading your video file via ftp to archive.org part one
FTP is a good way to upload larger files to the Internet. Web upload forms are very unstable. If you have a file that is over 10Mb it is generally advisable to use ftp to upload your files. FTP is a way of connecting to one of these servers to transfer the file from your computer [the local machine] to the Internet computer [ the remote computer ]. Once you have connected this process should be as easy as copying files from one directory/folder to another on your own machine. After you log in and click on Upload as shown previously you will see this screenitem name archive

Enter a name for your video item and click Create item! The name shouldn't have any spaces and should be quite unique.

If you are successful you will get the above screen. You may want to read the FAQ it lists if you need more info.
There also follows some intructions for uploading via an Internet Explorer window, but skip this and read the next section.

Well there is a better solution to those FTP client options now. One that works for Windows, Mac and Linux. It is called FireFtp and is an extension of the Firefox web browser.
The details you will need to input into FireFTP are
Host :ia300020.us.archive.org (as shown in the message above) Login : your email used for archive.org signin Password: the password you entered when registering for archive.org

Uploading your video file via ftp to archive.org part one [adding meta data] When you have sucessfully connected to the server with FireFtp then double click the directory which bears the name you just gave it and upload your video file there by selecting it in the left hand window ( your computer) and clicking on the green button pointng to the right window (the internet server window).

When the file is uploaded close the connection by clicking on Disconnect in the top bar of FileFtp.

You should then return to Archive.org. Ideally you will still have the following page open .

If you still have this page open you can click on the text that says, check your item in by clicking on this link. If not you need to do something a bit more complicated. See below.
If you click on the link to check in your item it reminds you to close your FTP connection when you have uploaded your file.

It may ask you to wait while it checks in the video. Then you should see this screen.

Click on the link it gives you to classify your video. Choose Open Source Movies.

Click on Submit movie.
Add Details about Video file (Meta data)

Add all relevant details here. Remember to add as much information as you can as it really helps people find your file. Think how long it took to make the video when you do this, try to make it worth that time by getting as many people as you can to find and watch it here.
Don't be scared by this form just fill in as much as you can and leave the rest.

Click on Submit when you are done.

You should get a message like this one.
Click in the link at the end after a few minutes and your video file should be there with the information about it listed on the same page.

You can see that there are a few ways to play the video. You can click on the Image in the centre of the page for a Streaming version of the video. Or you can clikc on the files listed on the left of the page, under View movie.
If you upload a high quality file, you will see that it re-encodes it and presents different options of different quality for use for preview files or high / low bandwidth use. An example is shown below.
